The Star Wars universe, created by George Lucas, is one of the most iconic film series of all time; and as such, it has some of the most quotable lines in movie history. One of my personal favorites is a quote by Yoda, the Jedi Master (see the image here).
There is a lot of wisdom in this simple statement. I have often heard people say that they tried to do something but couldn’t get it done, and they somehow think that trying is good enough. Friends, ‘good enough’ is the enemy of excellence, and ‘trying’ is the enemy of performance!
It does not matter what kind of job you may have, performance matters! If you are hired to cook hamburgers and you serve raw meat, you’re going to get fired. If you are hired to manage a multi-million dollar account and you blow it, you’re going to get fired. In the Christian world of love and grace, we are sometimes afraid to focus on results, but results really do matter! If we say we’ll do it, we must deliver!
In my last article, I wrote about values and how important they are to defining ‘why we do what we do.’ One of my values is the concept of ‘whatever it takes’ or ‘make it happen.’ Larry the cable guy says it this way, “Get ‘er done!”
Are we really willing to do whatever it takes to do IT? Will I sacrifice my time, effort and talents to make IT happen? You may ask, “What is IT? Honestly, what IT is does not matter! 
IT could be the Sunday morning sermon that I prepare each week. IT could be getting to church early enough to pass out bulletins and greet people as they arrive. IT could be sending a note to let someone know that you’ve been praying for them. IT could be stepping out in faith to share the gospel with a friend, neighbor or family member.
Whatever IT is, are you willing to do whatever it takes to make IT happen?
Our values drive us to do what we do—they determine the character and direction of our church and her ministries. It is my prayer that our church will have a ‘Make It Happen’ attitude as we serve God and our community!
