As we approach this section of the Book of Hebrews, I want to pause to once again notice the “therefore” at the beginning of our text, Hebrews 10:19-25. In light of all that has been written in the first nine-and-a-half chapters, we must now conform our thoughts and behaviors with the teachings on faith that follow this “therefore.” As we consider these seven verses, I’d like for us to ask ourselves two main questions: why do we have this confidence that the author speaks of? And what should we now do with this confidence?
As I was seeking God’s will as to what I should share with you today, he brought to my memory a message that I preached at our state association meeting last November—Journey of a Spiritual Man. I have wanted to share this sermon with you for some time now, but until today, God has not given me peace about doing so. I guess my mind has been focused this week on the journey that is this life. As we are nearing the end of my earthly father’s journey in this life, it has caused me to reflect on my journey as well.
This sermon was delivered as the Annual Message at the Baptist Missionary Association of Arkansas meeting on November 4, 2021, at Central Baptist College in Conway, Arkansas.
To avoid becoming a deformed disciple, Dr. Eugene Peterson suggests that we need a framework—and that framework should be worship. As we gather together week-by-week to worship God in this place, we experience this framework through the systematic teaching of God’s Word, through the people of God “sharpening” us and encouraging us, through lifting our voices in praise and adoration for who God is and for all He has done. Worship is that weekly reminder that provides us with a working definition for life.
The Bible teaches us that the purpose of salvation is to be conformed to the image of God’s Son—Jesus. The process by which that transformation happens is called “the Christian Walk.” There are many elements that are essential for that transformation process to take place. This will be our focus
for the next several weeks. The first of these is the element of PRAYER!
In this message, we want to focus our attention on the effect of Christ’s sacrifice on the cross. According to the passages we just read, what happened as a result of Jesus’ death, burial and resurrection?
It did not take long in Scripture before God clearly communicated His plan for the salvation of the world. We cannot forget that the Bible says that “without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins” (Hebrews 9:22b). And that is where we want to pick up in the Book of Genesis today, to see God reveal to His chosen people what His plan was for their salvation.
As we continue through this passage in Deuteronomy 6, we discover that the modern church has incorporated a great deal of secular psychology and parenting methods into the ministries of our churches. Churches today have taken on the responsibility of teaching the Bible to children and students through age-graded programs and special ministries designed for specific age groups, but the Bible is clear that it is the responsibility of parents to teach the Bible to their children. So what should parents do to teach their children?
The world is divided. The world is confused. The world is antagonistic toward God and His Holy Word. We are not! We believe that the words of Scripture were breathed out by God and “is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work” (2 Timothy 3:16-17 NLT). So let’s take a moment and read God’s Word!
Some may seek for spectacular signs and wonders, others may claim great miracles and manifestations of God’s power, but God speaks to each of us today through His Word. We need no priest, no prophet, no holy man, we have His holy Word. Are we listening to what He has to say to us today?
The idea of being alone is a hard one to deal with. It is something that some of you have had to learn to deal with. In this message, we will look at the ways in which we can overcome the fear of being alone.
