In this story of the two sisters who loved Jesus, we see this love demonstrated in two very different ways. Martha was the consummate hostess— abounding with the gift of hospitality. In many ways (it seems), Martha found her since of worth and identity in what she was able to do for the Lord Jesus. Her sister, on the other hand, was focused on being in the presence of the Savior—worshiping at His feet and listening to Him teach. God is more concerned about our being than He is our doing! When we focus on doing for the Lord before being with the Lord, we will get overwhelmed with the cares of this world which Jesus said (Mark 4:18-19) is like seed sown among thorns. The cares of this world will choke out the effectiveness of God’s Word in our hearts. This is why we need to emphasize worship over serving—being over doing.
